In addition to the current climate crisis, we are heading towards a global ecological nutrient crisis. According to science, the nutrient crisis will bring more serious ecological, economic and humanitarian challenges and conflicts than the climate crisis. But, ‘Why is no one talking about this nutrient crisis?’, ‘What do we mean by a nutrient crisis?’ and ‘How can we address this crisis?’ Ziegler’s Lecture Performance HOLY SHIT! is the result of a cross-disciplinary collaboration with soil researcher Prof. Dr Johannes Lehmann (Cornell University, USA), a cultural-historical, scientific, sociological, psychological and architectural research and a practical self-experiment, which she translates into a performative, participatory quiz show format. The artist conveys complex connections between historical and technical facts and ecological and scientific research results on nutrient cycles and reveals misguided inventions and developments in human history.
With the lecture performance HOLY SHIT! Ella Ziegler illustrates ecological connections and suggests model individual measures that close ecological nutrient cycles so that the health of our soil and the nutrition and health of humanity that depends on it can be guaranteed in the future.
