The banner PLANTS FEED HUMANS FEED PLANTS reminds us of the most fundamental cycle of all organic life, the organic nutrient cycle. All nutrients that humans consume through food come from the earth. Therefore, the nutrients humans excrete in their excrement must be returned to the soil, as they are the basis for organic growth. For 260 years, Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868) operated based on an ecological circular economy and experienced unprecedented cultural prosperity.

New cultural techniques and ecological everyday practices emerged from the resource-saving way of life. Artistic techniques, some of which we still know today: haiku, kabuki, no, calligraphy, kintsugi, sushi, and kimonos, were an expression of a resource-saving advanced culture. Inspired by this historical model of life and economics, reEDOCate me! the opportunity to reflect on our avoidance strategies and blockages: 20 artists translated the sustainability strategies of the Edo period to our current lives. For the reEDOCate me! Festival kitchen, where vegetables, grains and fruit are processed into food, the banner PLANTS FEED HUMANS FEED PLANTS was installed.
