World time, which is based on the earth’s rotation in relation to distant celestial objects, is as silent for us humans as the wandering shadow of a sundial. With the invention of the hourglass, time acquired the sound of trickling sand, and with the invention of clockwork, the ticking of clocks filled space. Time became the sound and rhythm of a new era. The development of global infrastructures led to the standardization of time zones. A certain place now had a certain time.
