KEEPSAKE
BERLIN (GER) 2000
I find the following leaflet in Marienburger Straße, Berlin:
Reward!
For the finder
of a wedding ring lost on
28. 2. 2000 with the inscription:
27th January 1901 Elly
Telephone: 4237570
I call the telephone number and research the history of the lost wedding ring. Elly Jacobson married Gustav Jacobson on 27th January 1901. They lived in Pernau / Estonia. Jacob was an army officer and Elly had 5 children with him. Gustav died before World War II. In 1939 Estonia was occupied by the Soviets. Elly fled with one of her sons by boat through the mined Baltic Sea to Gotenhafen in Poland. There they lived in a refugee camp. Later Elly, her son and his German wife Ilenora registered as citizens in Schwerin, Germany. They had a daughter named Evelyn Jacobson. During World War II Elly buried the wedding rings in the garden so they would not get lost during the war. At the end of the war her son died as a German soldier in the war against Poland. Before Elly died she gave the wedding rings to her daughter-in-law Ilenora. Ilenora gave the wedding rings to her daughter Evelyn. Evelyn gave the rings to her daughter Susanne. Her husband lost Gustav´s wedding ring in the swimming pool. Evelyn Mathiesen, née Jacobson lives in Berlin today. During a conversation she said »Refugees have fewer keepsakes but lots of memories«.
